1.2 million poultry and 25,000 pigs were destroyed in Donetsk region due to Russian shelling

In the agro-industrial complex of Donetsk region, since the beginning of the full-scale war, since February 2022, Russian shelling has destroyed 1.2 million birds in the poultry industry and 25,000 pigs in the pig industry.

Artem Chagan, director of the Department of Agro-Industrial Development and Land Relations of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, said: “Russian shelling destroyed a large part of livestock and poultry, and destroyed many premises for animals. First of all, it concerns poultry farming – 1.2 million poultry heads were lost. Only one of 13 poultry farms operates in the region, which significantly affected the gross production of eggs and market saturation. We also have huge losses in the field of pig breeding, where specialized enterprises lost more than 25,000 animals due to Russian hostilities,” said Chagan.

He added that in general, losses in the amount of 1.1 billion hryvnias have already been accrued in the animal husbandry of Donetsk region due to the full-scale war. The largest are in agricultural holdings on the contact line and in the occupied territories. But at the moment, it is “impossible to count them yet”, noted the head of the regional department.

As reported, the Donetsk region has the longest front line – about 300 km. Currently, about 472,000 residents remain on the territory of Donetsk under the control of the Ukrainian authorities.
