9 kilotons: the total charge of missiles fired over Ukraine is equivalent to a nuclear bomb

Russian shelling was aimed at the energy system of Ukraine, which threatens to turn off the lights already in the summer.

Russian troops launched several large-scale missile strikes on Ukraine. The total charge of all missiles is approximately 9 kilotons.

The objects of the power system became the targets of the Russian airstrikes. In Ukraine, the flexibility of electricity supply systems was ensured thanks to thermal power plants and renewable energy sources. They are able to quickly change the amount of generation in accordance with consumption needs. But the Russian attacks greatly undermined the capabilities of the maneuver generation.

In the first quarter of 2024, Russian forces launched a number of missiles equal to a small nuclear bomb of 9 kilotons. Therefore, in the future, it is important for Ukraine to develop distributed generation. Instead of one large 800 MW thermal power station, 40 stations of 20 MW should be built. They can be shunting gas power plants, modular boiler houses and small hydroelectric plants.

It is also important to create a broad Ramstein-type coalition to find and deliver the necessary equipment for energy restoration, and it is also important to increase the supply limits of imports from the EU energy grid.

On April 17, DTEK reported that the situation in the energy sector is the most difficult since the beginning of the full-scale war. The main problem is the lack of a sufficient number of air defense systems.
