During the two years of the full-scale invasion, the Russians destroyed more than 100 churches and other religious buildings in the Donetsk region. These data may not take into account all buildings, because most of them are under temporary occupation and in the war zone.
The Donetsk Regional Military Administration informed the Department of Culture and Tourism about the religious buildings.
“The administration, through monitoring, gathers information about religious buildings destroyed and damaged during the Russian aggression, most of which are located in the temporarily occupied territory of the region, on the contact line or in the zone of active hostilities, which makes it impossible to work on the survey of the level of damage. The administration is aware of the damage to more than 100 religious buildings,” the officials wrote.
These data are relevant as of the beginning of 2024.
In mid-summer 2023, at least 274 cultural and historical monuments were considered destroyed in Ukraine, 78 of them in Donetsk region.
