During the two years of occupation, the Russian authorities dealt a devastating blow to the ecosystem of Mariupol.
Spontaneous garbage dumps have formed in all districts of Mariupol, and sewage flows unhindered into the Sea of Azov, polluting reservoirs and the coast. The Kalchyk River is in a particularly critical situation, which is becoming more and more polluted every day.
This is reported by the Mariupol City Council.
Local residents are sounding the alarm, because they have noticed how waste from a concrete plant is dumped into the Kalchyk River in the area of the village of Richne of the Kalmyu district.
“Once upon a time, fishermen used to go to this bridge to catch fish. And now there is a milky river here,” the residents of Mariupol are outraged.
Russians not only ignore the problem of river pollution, but also contribute to its deterioration. Previously, they built an overlap across Kalchyk, filling a large part of the river with earth and slag.
In addition, a whole “river” of sewage was formed in Leporsky Park. Sewage problems in Mariupol have reached the scale of a real collapse: constant breakthroughs and flooding of houses, and now also parks.
During the two years of occupation, the Russians were unable to either replace the engineering networks or create an effective utility company. Instead, with their inaction and deliberate destruction of the environment, they are pushing Mariupol towards an ecological disaster.
The Mariupol City Council emphasizes that the actions of the occupiers lead to a complete fiasco in the field of ecology and communal services of the city. If urgent measures are not taken, the consequences for human health and the environment may be irreversible.
