Having barely captured Melitopol region, the Russians immediately began plundering the region. The city museum, which housed many valuable exhibits, was also raided by barbarians.
1.03 million exhibits are or were under temporary occupation, which is 9.1% of the Museum Fund of Ukraine. As a result of the hostilities, 1.43 million storage units were damaged – this is 12.6% of the fund, Acting Minister of Culture and Information Policy Rostislav Karandeev said.
According to him, part of the collections from the museums that were occupied have been lost. For example, 1,745 items made of precious metals, including 277 items made of gold, were taken out of the Melitopol City Local History Museum.
In 1954, ancient Scythian gold was discovered in a Scythian mound in Melitopol. They tried to take it to the Hermitage, but Ukrainian archaeologists managed to keep the find in Ukraine.
In 2022, the Russians still stole the relics, despite the efforts of the museum staff to hide them.
The Russians removed about 80% of the stock collection from the Oleksiy Shovkunenko Kherson Art Museum. The cultural values removed from this museum were moved to the Central Tavrida Museum in Simferopol.
As long as part of the museums remain under occupation, it is impossible to assess the damage. Currently, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine is creating lists of lost objects of the state part of the Museum Fund of Ukraine from museums located in the de-occupied territories.
According to the Acting Minister, as a result of hostilities, 1.43 million storage units were damaged, which is 12.6% of the Museum Fund of Ukraine.
