Until recently, the fertile and flourishing region is rapidly turning into a desert. Reservoirs in the Melitopol district are drying up, which entails the destruction of chernozems.
All this is a consequence of the actions of the Russian troops, who captured most of the Zaporizhzhia region. After the Kakhovskaya HPP was blown up and the reservoir was drained, the system of irrigation canals ceased to exist.
For some time, water still remained in the largest Main Canal, but due to the heat and selection for irrigation of the adjacent fields, it is also rapidly emptying.
The smaller ones, which originate near Yakymivka, have already been washed down to the ground.
Uncontrolled drilling of wells has led to the depletion of horizons and a drop in the water level in the rivers of the region. The occupation authorities’ efforts aimed at clearing did not bring any results, except for additional silting of riverbeds. Local residents say that in many areas the water has fallen by 0.5-1.5 meters.
The fact that the south of Ukraine is threatened by desertification was discussed by scientists right after the destruction of the Kakhovskyі Reservoir. The felling of plantations for the needs of the raschis and, as a result, the strengthening of the winds and the increase in temperature accelerated this process.
Desertification is a widespread problem of degradation of land resources. It consists in the fact that fertile lands turn into deserts, devoid of moisture and vegetation. As a result, such territories become unsuitable for human life, and only some species of flora and fauna will be able to adapt to life in such conditions.
Residents of the villages of Melitopol are already experiencing a lack of moisture and are forced to slaughter livestock because there is nothing to feed them. The cultivation of agricultural products is also decreasing rapidly.
Thus, in a few years, the Melitopol district may turn into a subtropics with a hot and dry climate, where it will be possible to survive with great difficulty. This fully fits into the policy of genocide of the Ukrainian people, which was brought to our land by the Russian occupiers.
