In Ukraine, more than 1,700 children are considered missing due to the war. This was reported by Deputy Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Leonid Timchenko, citing data from the Unified Register of Persons Missing Under Special Circumstances.
Specialized centers operating under the National Police are involved in the search for minors throughout Ukraine. 1,934 children are listed as missing in Ukraine.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine previously adopted a resolution according to which the Ministry of Justice will form and maintain a register of forcibly displaced Ukrainian children. As noted, the decision is aimed at “regulating the protection of the rights and interests of children deported or forcibly displaced in connection with Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.”
As of the end of October 2024, according to the Ukrainian authorities, 19,546 children are considered deported or forcibly displaced. Official Kyiv emphasizes that “the exact number of affected children cannot be determined due to active hostilities and the temporary occupation of part of the territory of Ukraine.” Russia reported 700 thousand children taken out of Ukraine at the end of July 2024.
In early October, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in its resolution on the situation in Ukraine indicated that as of September 18, 2024, 65,956 Ukrainian military personnel and civilians are listed as missing or captured. Of these, 50,916 people are listed as missing based on verified data.
