It is the only temple in the world completely painted with Petrikov painting.
The Russian authorities have decided to “remodel” the Church of St. Peter the Tomb and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Mariupol.
This was reported by the Mariupol City Council.
The temple is the only one in the world that is completely painted in the style of Petrykiv painting, thanks to which it was included in the Book of Records of Ukraine. However, now, at the behest of the Russians, its appearance is going to be changed in accordance with the “canons of the Russian Orthodox Church”. A group of “Orthodox volunteers” will change the decorations.
Before the war, the temple, located in the Primorsky district, was restored by volunteers thanks to the contributions of patrons. Petrykiv paintings were made by Lviv artist Olga Cheryomushkina.
In 2022, during the siege of Mariupol, the temple became a refuge for the civilian population, but after the capture of the city, the commission from the Russian Orthodox Church stated that the decoration did not meet their requirements.
