Missile attack on Ivano-Frankivsk region on December 25

On Christmas morning, December 25, Russian troops carried out another missile strike on the energy infrastructure of Ivano-Frankivsk region, as a result of which part of the region was left without electricity

The morning of December 25 in Ivano-Frankivsk region began with an air alert and missile strikes on the critical infrastructure of the region, as a result of which the equipment of thermal power plants was seriously damaged and a number of settlements in the region were temporarily deprived of electricity.

“At a time when we celebrate one of the biggest religious holidays – Christmas, the Russians attacked us with missiles, trying to destroy the energy infrastructure in order to plunge us into darkness, but fortunately, there were no casualties,” said the head of the Ivano-Frankivsk regional military administration, Svitlana Onyshchuk.

In the city of Kalush, due to damage to the energy infrastructure, the operation of the treatment plants was suspended, which led to the cessation of water and heat supply.

“Unfortunately, due to power outages, the treatment plants in the city are not working, so the water supply had to be temporarily stopped,” said Andriy Nayda, the chairman of Kalush.

According to the energy company DTEK, this is the thirteenth massive attack on the Ukrainian energy sector and the tenth strike directly on the company’s energy enterprises, as a result of which the equipment of thermal power plants was seriously damaged.

“Energy workers promptly began eliminating the consequences of the attack and restoring the operation of the damaged equipment in order to restore the power supply to consumers as soon as possible,” the DTEK press service emphasized.

In the Ivano-Frankivsk urban territorial community, according to the mayor, no arrivals were recorded, however, temporary interruptions in power supply and mobile communications were observed, which arose as a result of the activation of air defense systems.

Residents of Kalush, Burshtyn and Ivano-Frankivsk were left without electricity.

One of Ukraine’s TPPs, Burshtynska, is located in the city of Burshtyn. It includes 12 power units (with a capacity of 200 MW each) and is part of PJSC DTEK Zakhidenergo. The station has already been shelled in the spring of 2024 and in the fall of 2022. The operation of this TPP is important for the region. Previously, two or three power units were constantly operating for electricity export. It was one of the largest generation facilities in the Western power system of Ukraine.
