This fall, Russia resumed massive attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, destroying one of the last generation units in Chernihiv region, which led to 14-hour power outages.
Ukraine has faced its coldest and most severe winter since 2022 due to intense Russian attacks on the energy system. The situation in Chernihiv region is one of the worst: one of the last generation units was destroyed here, leaving residents without electricity and heating for up to 14 hours a day.
Two weeks ago, the Russians purposefully destroyed one of the last energy facilities in Chernihiv region. Although the local energy company ChernihivOblenergo built two protective walls of concrete and sand around the substation, the lack of a roof and funding for underground construction left it vulnerable.
For three days, the complex was under attack by Russian drones. Attempts by the Ukrainian military to shoot down the drones with small arms were unsuccessful.
According to the management of the regional energy company, the facility is beyond repair.
“The Russians are trying to create a complete blackout for the civilian population. There is nothing military here. This is deliberate genocide against civilians,” said a representative of the energy company.
