As a result of the night attack of the Shahed type UAV on railway facilities on January 11, the driver and his assistant received shrapnel wounds.
According to the chairman of the board of the joint-stock company “Ukrzaliznytsia” Oleksandr Pertsovsky, the Russian drone exploded in the immediate vicinity of the freight locomotive. Thanks to the timely notification from the monitoring officers, the railway workers managed to safely secure the train to avoid an accident, but they did not have time for a full evacuation and were forced to lie down directly next to the car. Currently, both railway workers are in the hospital: doctors removed the debris and applied stitches, their condition is assessed as stable.
The massive shelling caused serious power outages on the Prydniprovska railway, which is why train movement on certain sections at night was provided by diesel locomotives and backup generators. As of January 11, power has been restored on the main lines, although some trains continue to operate under thermal power to back up the system. Despite a series of hits on the railway infrastructure, repair crews are quickly repairing the damage, which has avoided major delays in the schedule of passenger and freight trains. Unlike previous attacks, when the Russians targeted mainly large hub stations, the current attack on the locomotive crew while they were moving indicates the Russian Federation’s intention to directly terrorize the railway staff. Alexander Pertsovsky emphasized the heroism of the crew, which until the last moment took care of the safety of the property entrusted to it. All necessary medical and psychological assistance is being provided to the injured railway workers in full under the control of the company’s management, and the logistics network continues to operate in an enhanced mode to meet the needs of defense and the civilian population.
