On the night of February 3, on the eve of a new stage of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Abu Dhabi, Russia launched a massive strike with drones and missiles on Kharkiv, targeting the city’s energy infrastructure.
Chairman Igor Terekhov reported this on social networks. According to him, the shelling lasted for more than three hours, and the aim of the attacks was to inflict maximum damage to the energy system and leave the city without heat in conditions of severe frost.
Terekhov noted that due to the unprecedented attack, difficult but forced decisions are being made. In particular, in order to prevent the heating network from freezing, the city will have to drain the coolant in the system of 820 homes that receive heat from one of the largest thermal power plants.
The chairman emphasized that experts currently see no other way out, despite the fact that the decision is being made in conditions of about twenty degrees of frost. Due to the situation in Kharkiv, all 101 Nezlamnosti points will be open around the clock, where residents can warm up, drink hot drinks and charge mobile devices. If necessary, additional heating points will be deployed in the city promptly.
There may also be disruptions in the work of city electric transport. Additional bus routes are being launched to ensure uninterrupted traffic in the city.
Terekhov stressed that the night and morning are extremely difficult for Kharkiv, but the city continues to work, all services are on site, and decisions are being made promptly. According to him, the situation remains under control.
