The shelling of the Dnipro by the Russians on the night of April 15 damaged the cultural heritage object — the “Old Building of the Construction Institute”. Its construction began in 1930. The construction was carried out by teachers and students of the educational institution.
Work on the building was completed during the 1931/1932 academic year. The exterior decoration of the facades was carried out after 1935 — according to a separate project by architect Boris Kashchenko.
Several extensions were built almost on all sides of the building during the 1950s–1970s. These were, in particular, a boiler room, additional educational buildings and an assembly hall (designed by architect Oleg Petrov).
The structures collapsed in the damaged building. A detailed inspection of the damage is currently impossible. The relevant services are working on the spot.
According to the Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, as a result of hitting the building of the Pridniprovska Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture, the ceiling structures were completely destroyed and the load-bearing walls and partitions of the student building were partially damaged. The roof of the building with an approximate area of 1,500 m² was also damaged. The blast wave broke out windows and doors on an area of approximately 2,500 m².
According to Oksen Lisovyi, one of the damaged buildings is of national historical significance, the other is of local significance. The material and technical base was also damaged as a result of the shelling. Two people were injured.
“The targeted shelling of universities is an attempt to disrupt studies, sow fear and make young people doubt their future in Ukraine. This is a cynical attempt to strike at education as the basis of the country’s development,” the minister wrote.
The campus of the Dniprovska Polytechnic National Technical University was also damaged. This was reported by the university.
The institution noted that the destruction is serious.
“This is a place where so many people found themselves, their profession, their people, and it is truly painful to see it like this. The first building has seen worse – after World War II it was raised from the ruins, and this memory has not gone anywhere,” the report says.
The university has already begun restoration work. Representatives of the city government and volunteers have joined in the support. At the same time, the university has appealed to graduates and those who care to help with the restoration. A collection of charitable contributions has been opened for this.
Explosions were heard in Dnipro at around 3:00 on April 15. The administration building was set on fire, more than a thousand windows were shattered. A 29-year-old woman was injured, she was hospitalized in moderate condition. A 22-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man were also injured, they are receiving outpatient treatment.
