Russia launched a combined strike on the Shostka community: there are casualties and destruction

The Shostka community in Sumy region was subjected to a massive Russian attack on April 28 using aircraft, drones and missiles. As a result of the shelling, there were deaths and injuries among civilians, residential buildings, a hospital and infrastructure were damaged. Some residents had to be evacuated, and the destroyed housing was declared uninhabitable.

According to the chairman, Mykola Noga, the Russians simultaneously struck several locations, which caused significant destruction. During the night shelling, a residential building was destroyed, in which a woman born in 1950 died. Two more women were injured, and the residents suffered severe psychological shock. The hospital where the patients were staying, residential areas and private houses were also damaged.

“The past day was extremely difficult. The Russians simultaneously carried out air strikes on three locations. These are shaheeds, these are Erbers, these are missiles. First of all, an apartment building was destroyed, where people simply lived. One woman in her 50s died. Two women were injured. In addition, a hospital ward was shelled, where patients were lying, they were forced to transfer them to another ward. Ordinary people were also affected. While it was spinning, until it hit a gas station, it destroyed it. Because that’s how we live in the border region, we are forced to live in such difficult conditions,” said Mykola Noga.

The chairman noted that rescue operations continued all night, and as of April 29, the consequences of the attack had not been eliminated. Some of the damaged high-rise buildings and private houses, after a commission inspection, will probably be recognized as unsuitable for restoration.

According to Mykola Noha, the community receives assistance from the regional administration, the State Emergency Service, as well as international humanitarian organizations, in particular the Red Cross and Prolisky. They provide psychological support and building materials to the victims.

“There are people who leave, there are people who come. We have 7,600 internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have come to our community. We have 38 settlements in our community where IDPs are accommodated and where city residents can go to the countryside. Those who cannot survive such difficult conditions, of course, leave for safer regions, and we help them with this. We have a hub for IDPs, we help them move to other safe places,” he said.

He emphasized that despite the constant threats, residents are increasingly using shelters and security measures, and local authorities are gradually expanding the protective infrastructure.

Several underground shelters have already been built in the community, new projects are underway, including involving state funding and international partners. The development of underground infrastructure, including medical facilities, is also planned to increase the level of protection of the civilian population in conditions of regular shelling.
