Russians attack Odesa region again: civilian vessel damaged

On the morning of May 5, Russians attacked the port of Greater Odesa. As a result of the strike, a civilian vessel flying the Cook Islands flag was damaged. No one on board was injured.

Despite the consequences, the port continues to operate, taking into account the security situation. Specialized services are eliminating the consequences of the strike.

“The next strike is aimed at civilian shipping. The port operates taking into account security risks, specialized services are eliminating the consequences,” the message from the Sea Ports Authority of Ukraine says.

Ports continue to be one of the main targets of attacks. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 900 port infrastructure facilities have been damaged or partially destroyed, including 177 civilian vessels. At the same time, the number of drone attacks is increasing: if 75 UAVs were recorded in the first four months of last year, then this year there are already more than 800 of them.

Despite the constant strikes, the port system continues to operate. Since the beginning of the year, almost 30 million tons of cargo have been handled.

The Odesa region has experienced a difficult April with massive drone and missile attacks. Despite constant shelling, the region is restoring damaged facilities and strengthening protection. The authorities are working on the security of schools and shelters so that children can study offline. In parallel, they are preparing for the tourist season.

Russia is using unmanned sea boats for attacks, in particular near Odesa. There has been no mass use yet, but the threat remains real.
