Robert Fico demands guarantees that he will not support Ukraine’s EU membership

The Slovak National Party SNS, which is part of the ruling coalition in Slovakia. The SNS is known for its xenophobic, anti-Hungarian and anti-Gypsy speeches, as well as its campaign to rehabilitate pro-fascist President Josef Tyso. The SNS also supports the Russian Federation. In October 2012, Andrey Danko was elected as the Party’s chairman. On May 9, 2019, Danko attended a military parade in Moscow, where he was the only European politician present at the event.

The Slovak National Party has made a tough demand to the country’s Prime Minister Robert Fico regarding his position on Ukraine’s European integration. The political force insists that the government refrain from supporting Ukraine’s accession to the European Union at least until the current parliament completes its term.

In his statement, party leader Andrej Danko stressed that the SNS does not agree with possible agreements between the Slovak leadership and the Ukrainian side on supporting Kyiv’s European integration course. He emphasized that the party opposes Ukraine’s accession to the EU and believes that the current prime minister does not have sufficient political mandate to make such decisions on behalf of the state.

Separately, the nationalists proposed introducing a de facto moratorium on any decisions or public support for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union for the period of the current parliament. They stated that they were even ready for political responsibility if their demands were not taken into account by the government. The SNS also emphasized that they insist on clear guarantees: according to their position, the prime minister should not support any decisions that could contribute to Ukraine’s accession to the EU within the current government term.

At the same time, Robert Fico previously stated his support for Ukraine’s European integration aspirations. After talks with the President of Ukraine, he emphasized that, despite disagreements on certain issues, Slovakia is interested in maintaining good-neighborly and constructive relations with Ukraine.
