On May 17-18, the city of Dnipro lived to the sounds of explosions, sirens and air defense. The city shuddered from the attacks of the “Shaheeds”, and at night it experienced one of the most massive combined attacks in recent times. People did not come out of shelters for hours, went down to the subway and basements, and some spent more than eight hours underground due to the constant danger and train delays, writes “Our City”.
It all started in the afternoon of May 17. Russian troops almost continuously attacked the city with strike drones. The work of our defenders, who shot down Russian targets, could be heard over the Dnipro River.
In the evening, the Russians again attacked the Novokodatsky district of the Dnipro. As a result of the “Shaheed” strike, at least two private houses were damaged. The blast wave shattered windows and damaged the roofs of neighboring houses.
On the evening of May 17, a mosque in the Sursko-Litovsk community was also hit. A pregnant woman was inside at the time of the attack. Fortunately, she was not injured, but the building itself was seriously damaged.
The night of May 18 was the most terrible. More than ten cruise and ballistic missiles and dozens of attack drones flew into the city of Dnipro. The sky above the city was continuously lit up with explosions.
More than 50 houses were damaged as a result of the attack. Residential areas, two kindergartens, a gymnasium, a building of one of the institutes, a mosque, and even a tram were destroyed.
Local residents recall that the night was one of the most terrible during the entire period of the full-scale war.
“We were in the corridor, my son and I were knocked down by a powerful blow. We were all covered in dust. Thank God we were able to get out ourselves. The main thing is that we are safe,” says a resident of the damaged house.
There are already several thousand broken windows in the city. Balconies, doors and roofs in many apartments are damaged. The owner of one of the stores that was affected by the blast wave says the damage is enormous.
“You see, there are no windows, doors… the damage is very enormous. Just one refrigerator costs three thousand euros… I don’t know how it will be,” says the woman.
After the attack, dozens of people are asking for help. Municipal services, charitable and international organizations are working on the ground. People are being given OSB boards, film and building materials for temporary repairs to their homes.
According to Yuriy Yandulskyі, Deputy chairman of Dnipro, the number of people’s appeals continues to grow.
“As a result of the shelling, 23 people were injured, including two children. All are receiving necessary medical care, eight people are in hospitals in moderate condition. The youngest victim is a five-month-old child, who quickly recovered and has already been discharged.
Currently, municipal and operational services are eliminating the consequences of the attack. Damage to more than 40 apartment and private buildings has already been recorded in the city. Thousands of windows have been broken, and the damage is estimated at millions of hryvnias,” reports Yuriy Yandulskyі.
The Russian Federation has once again dealt a cynical blow to residential areas of the city, where civilians, children and elderly residents live. Despite the destruction, residents of the city of Dnipro began cleaning glass, closing broken windows and helping each other recover from another terrible night of war in the morning.
