Alexander Lukashenko finds himself in a “vice”
Alexander Lukashenko has found himself in a difficult situation amid increasing pressure from Russia and Ukraine. Moscow is seeking greater support from Minsk in the military standoff, while Kyiv is warning of possible strikes on facilities that could be used to attack Ukrainian territory.

Shortly thereafter, Lukashenko met personally with Putin in Valdai. Experts believe the Kremlin is attempting to draw Belarus deeper into the war by using its territory for military operations and pressure on Ukraine, without sending the Belarusian army directly to the front.
Lukashenko himself has stated that he does not intend to send troops to the war. He also softened his rhetoric against Zelenskyі and called for Minsk not to be provoked. The Belarusian leadership’s situation is complicated by maintaining ties with Kyiv while maintaining a close alliance with Moscow. Relations with the West have become an additional pressure factor: the release of approximately 250 political prisoners previously led to a partial easing of sanctions by the United States.
