The vast majority are Koreans: journalists have counted how many foreigners recruited by Moscow died in the war with Ukraine

At least 3,589 foreigners from more than 40 countries of the world have died fighting on the side of Russia during the full-scale war against Ukraine. The largest part of these losses are military personnel from North Korea, whom Moscow involved in hostilities after the start of the operation of Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region.

This is reported by the BBC. According to the publication, among the dead foreigners recruited by the Russian Federation, Koreans from the DPRK make up more than 60%.

Journalists have confirmed the death of almost 3,600 foreigners

According to a journalistic investigation, as of now, it has been possible to establish the death of 3,589 foreign citizens who fought on the side of Russia.

Of these, 1,285 people were identified by name by BBC journalists, together with the Mediazona publication and a team of volunteers. Their deaths were confirmed using open sources – reports from authorities, posts by relatives on social networks, photos of graves and military memorials.

In total, the database of dead Russian soldiers, which is maintained by journalists, currently contains more than 233,000 names.

Most of the dead foreigners are military personnel from North Korea

The largest share of losses among foreigners are citizens of North Korea.

According to the BBC Korean Service, 2,304 North Korean soldiers were killed during battles against the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Kursk region after the Ukrainian operation, which began in August 2024.
