Russian troops attacked Sumy region twice with drones with depleted uranium

Counterintelligence and investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine documented 2 new facts of the use of depleted uranium munitions by the Russian Federation in Geran-2 attack UAVs. The Russians used them twice to attack Sumy region in April 2026.

These are R-60M air-to-air guided missiles, which the enemy uses as warheads for its drones during massive shelling of Ukraine.

During the work of the investigative and operational group at the sites of Russian “arrivals”, the level of gamma radiation from the fragments of Russian drones was 8.3 and 10.5 μSv/h.

“These indicators significantly exceed the natural radiation background and pose a direct threat to human health,” the Security Service of Ukraine said.

According to the results of the examination initiated by the Security Service of Ukraine, it was established that the warhead of the Russian missiles contains depleted uranium warheads with a total mass of 2,810 grams. The substance was identified as Uranium-234, Uranium-235 and Uranium-238.

After the detection and study of dangerous components, comprehensive measures were taken to neutralize them.

Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine are conducting a pre-trial investigation under Art. 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes) to identify and prosecute Russians responsible for the air attacks.
