Counterintelligence and investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine have documented new facts of the use of depleted uranium ammunition by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Dangerous components were found in Geran-2 type attack drones, with which the Russian army attacked the Chernihiv region during April-June of this year.
During the investigation, it became clear that the Russian troops use radioactive elements in R-60M missiles, which they adapted for use on their UAVs.
“During the inspection of the “arrival” sites of Russian drones and the radiological examination of their warheads, the investigative and operational group and specialists of the State Emergency Service recorded an excess of the natural radiation background by 80 times. At the same time, the level of gamma radiation from individual fragments of Russian drones ranged from 8.3 to 24 μSv/h, with an acceptable sanitary norm of 0.3 μSv/h. Such a radiation background poses a direct threat to human health and the environment,” the Security Service of Ukraine noted.
According to the results of the examination initiated by the Security Service, it was established that the warheads of these missiles contain nuclear material identified as Uranium-235 and Uranium-238. The presence of radioactive components was confirmed by dosimetric equipment and a mobile automated radiological complex.
“After the discovery and investigation of dangerous munitions, comprehensive measures were taken to neutralize them and protect citizens,” the statement said.
The Security Service once again calls on citizens to be careful if they discover fragments of UAVs, missiles, or other munitions. Do not approach, touch, or move such objects.
