“I thought it was a good chance”: the Armed Forces of Ukraine captured a foreigner with a famous name
Ukrainian military captured Egyptian citizen Mohamed Salah, the full namesake of the Liverpool star who fought against Ukraine for Russian citizenship. Since the name of the prisoner of war completely coincides with the name of the famous Egyptian football player Mohamed Salah, this attracted attention to the man’s story.
According to the prisoner, he received higher education in Egypt, after which he moved to Russia to obtain an international certificate in programming. The man lived in Yekaterinburg, Sverdlovsk Region, where he studied at the Ural Federal University. It is known that during his stay in the Russian Federation he created a family – he has a wife and daughter.
Approximately two years after moving, the Egyptian learned about the opportunity to sign a contract with the Russian army. The main motivation for joining the ranks of the occupation forces was the desire to obtain a Russian passport and social benefits in a simplified way, rather than financial difficulties.
“I heard that I might have the opportunity to obtain a Russian passport and serve in the army. I understood that there are many benefits for veterans. As you know, veterans are highly respected everywhere in the country. This way we get an apartment, a passport and access to public services. Therefore, it seemed to me that this was a good chance to become a full-fledged part of society,” said Mohamed Salah.
According to the Egyptian, before moving to Russia, he had no military experience. After signing the contract, he was sent to the Russian army, and later to the war against Ukraine, where he was captured by the Ukrainian military.
The prisoner is currently in Ukraine, where he is provided with the necessary medical care and is held in accordance with the norms of the Geneva Conventions on the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
