Russian FPV drone strike in Sumy kills 38-year-old woman near apartment entrance; husband in intensive care

On the evening of September 20, a Russian FPV drone attacked a married couple near the entrance to their apartment building in Sumy. The strike killed 38-year-old Anna, while her 41-year-old husband, Mykhailo, sustained severe injuries and was admitted to intensive care. The couple was together at the time of the attack, though their 15-year-old daughter was not with them.

Anna worked as a manicurist and pedicurist; a colleague announced her death. Mykhailo was beside his wife when the strike occurred and is currently in critical condition in intensive care, according to a family acquaintance.

Local media reported that a drone equipped with an optical targeting system struck near the building’s entrance in a residential area of ​​Sumy. A second strike followed shortly after, hitting a road near the building. The couple is survived by their 15-year-old daughter, who was not at the entrance during the attack.

Although the intensity of ground assaults in the North Slobozhanshchyna and Kursk sectors is decreasing, shelling of populated areas continues. Over the past week, 19 combat engagements with Russian troops were recorded in these sectors—six fewer than the previous week—according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

At the same time, over a five-day period, Russian forces carried out 415 attacks on Defense Forces positions and populated areas, including 16 strikes using multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS). This means that shelling of residential areas and civilian infrastructure remains a constant threat to the region’s residents, even when ground combat activity subsides.
