Data center destroyed, shopping mall and medical facility damaged: aftermath of Russian attack on Kyiv

Kyiv came under massive attack by Russia again on the night of October 19. Widespread destruction has been reported in the capital and the surrounding region; there are casualties, and two deaths have been confirmed.

The Desnianskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Solomianskyi districts of the capital were hit.

In the Solomianskyi district, debris from a Russian missile damaged a 25-story residential building. Five people, aged 21 to 77, were injured; one of them has been hospitalized.

The blast wave shattered numerous windows in the high-rise, ripped out air conditioning units in some places, and damaged the facade. Sidewalks are covered in glass and debris.

A McDonald’s located on the ground floor of the building was also damaged, as was a nearby polyclinic. At the latter site, the entrance area was damaged, windows were blown out, the facade was mangled, and parked cars were struck.

The building also houses one of the city’s consultative-diagnostic centers; the blast wave blew out over 200 windows and doors, damaged the ceilings, and destroyed equipment within the medical facility.

None of the staff were injured, and medical personnel have been reassigned to work at other facilities. There were no patients in the medical center at the time of the attack. The Russians also caused significant damage to the Cosmo Multimall shopping center on Vadym Hetman Street, near the Shuliavska metro station. The complex housed dozens of shops, dining establishments, a cinema, a bowling alley, and an ice rink.

The “Zviropolis” petting zoo, also located within the complex, was affected. The animals survived and are being evacuated to a safer location.

Following the attack, a section of the building’s canopy was destroyed, and the surrounding area was left covered in debris and broken glass.

In the Desnianskyi district, debris fell onto a non-residential building, and parked cars were damaged. The surface-level Chernihivska metro station, part of the Red Line, sustained serious damage.

Following the shelling, the Chernihivska and Lisova stations have been closed for entry and exit while the damage is addressed. The strike damaged the stations themselves, the tracks, and the cable network.

Currently, the Red Line is operating normally between the Akademmistechko and Darnytsia stations. There is no overcrowding of passengers on the platforms.

All other lines are operating as usual.

In the Dniprovskyi district, a non-residential building was damaged. According to the State Emergency Service, it is an educational institution. While the building itself did not sustain major damage, a “nature corner” (an area housing animals or plants) was completely destroyed. The provider Datagroup has reported that its data center equipment and infrastructure were completely destroyed as a result of a ballistic missile attack overnight. The company serves subscribers in over 90 settlements across Ukraine.
