Russia attacked Kyiv overnight with three ballistic missiles equipped with cluster warheads; a strike hit the Pechersk district

On the night of October 22, Russian forces launched three ballistic missiles carrying cluster warheads against Kyiv. One of the missiles struck the historic Pechersk district, landing between the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the Holy Vvedensky Monastery. The attack damaged monastery buildings, residential homes, shops, and cafes. Throughout the day on October 22, air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv and many other Ukrainian cities.

The attacks were not limited to Kyiv. In Kharkiv, a missile struck a commuter train, highlighting the threat that missile strikes pose to civilian infrastructure. Other areas—including the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Rivne regions, as well as the cities of Dnipro, Marhanets, Mykolaiv, and Kherson—also came under fire.

Since October 11, more than 170 strikes on critical energy infrastructure have been recorded.

While some of the missiles and “Shahed” drones have been successfully intercepted, Russia continues to prioritize further terror against the Ukrainian people in the coming weeks. Ukraine is receiving assistance from international partners to restore its energy infrastructure. The Ministry of Defence, the military command, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been tasked with keeping partners informed about the situation and the threats, based on intelligence data. Various facilities were damaged as a result of the missile strikes, including monastery buildings, residential homes, shops, cafes, civilian infrastructure, the urban railway, and critical energy infrastructure. The situation remains tense, and Ukrainian society continues to adapt to the challenges arising from the hostilities.

These recent attacks demonstrate the continuation of Russia’s aggressive strategy, which puts not only military targets but also the civilian population and infrastructure at risk. Amidst frequent air raid alerts, Ukrainians are forced to adapt to a new reality where safety has become the top priority. In this context, international support is crucial for strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and restoring destroyed infrastructure.

These events highlight not only the scale of the aggression but also its impact on the civilian population.
