Losses among civilians from February 24, 2022, after Russia started the war against Ukraine, to March 26, 2023 amounted to 22,424 civilians (as of March 19 – 22,209), including 8,401 dead (8,317), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported.
“The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights believes that the actual number of civilian deaths or injuries is significantly higher, as many reports from locations where such incidents have occurred in the past still require further confirmation, while information from some locations , where hostilities are ongoing, is being delayed,” the document emphasizes on UN data.
This applies to such settlements as Mariupol (Donetsk region), Lysychansk, Popasna and Severodonetsk (Luhansk region), where, according to reports, numerous cases of the death or injury of civilians have been recorded.
According to confirmed UN data, 3,764 men, 2,240 women, 263 boys and 205 girls died, while the gender of 31 children and 1,898 adults has not yet been determined.
Among the 14,023 wounded, 418 boys and 295 girls, as well as 274 children, whose gender has not yet been determined.
Compared to the data on March 19, three children died and five more were injured.
If previously the report of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the number of casualties was published daily, and then only on working days, since July it has become weekly. This summary, like the previous one, shows data by month.
According to them, the number of dead in the 26 days of March – 159 – has already exceeded the number of victims in February 2023 – 141, which became the lowest since the beginning of the war after 198 in January 2023, 206 in December 2022 and 185 in November 2022.
March 2022 remains the deadliest month for civilians, according to the UN, with at least 4,044 deaths. In April 2022, according to the publication of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the number of civilian deaths due to the war decreased to 764, in May 2022 – to 521, in June 2022 – to 423 and in July 2022 – to 378. In the first five days of the war from 358 people died from February 24 to 28, 332 in August 2022, 387 in September 2022, and 305 in October 2022.
The number of wounded for the incomplete March 2023 – 485 – also exceeded the figure for February 2023 – 458, which remained minimal since the beginning of the war. In January 2023, they were 539, in December 2022 – 617, in November 2022 – 541. In October 2022, the number of injured decreased to 795 from 976 in September, when it was higher than the figure of August 2022 – 917. Before that, the number of injured exceeded a thousand every month : July 2022 – 1126, June 2022 – 1104, May 2022 – 1136, April 2022 – 1888, March 2022 – 2972. In the first five days of the war in February 2022, 465 people were injured.
According to the summary, since the beginning of March 2023, 137 people have been killed and another 417 injured from large-area explosive weapons, while 22 people have died and 68 have been injured from mines and explosive remnants of war (14% of total casualties).
According to the UN, in March 2023, 86% of the victims were in government-controlled territories.
