During the night air attack on Ukraine on September 25, Russia struck the Odesa region. Port infrastructure, granaries were damaged, a fire broke out in a defunct hotel near the seaport. Two people died as a result of the attack.
The Russians used attack drones and two types of missiles. Oleg Kiper, the head of the regional military administration, reported on the consequences of another terrorist act: “Unfortunately, there was a hit. The port infrastructure was under attack. A fire broke out in a non-residential high-rise in the city of Odesa. It was promptly extinguished.”
According to him, destruction was also recorded in a warehouse and one of the private houses of the Odesa district.
As a result of the explosive wave, a peaceful resident of Odessa was injured. The woman received shrapnel injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where she is receiving all the necessary assistance.
Later, he reported that the body of another deceased was found under the rubble.
“The body of the second person who died as a result of the night attack of Russian terrorists on Odesa was just found under the rubble. My condolences to the family…”, said Kiper.
During the night air alert on September 25, the first few explosions in Odesa were heard after 00:10. Later, the loud noises repeated. Then the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces warned that Shahed-type kamikaze attack drones were moving towards the Odesa region. Later, they indicated that drones, Kalibr and Onyx missiles were flying towards the region.
According to Natalia Gumenyuk, the head of the press center of the Southern Defense Forces, the Russian army launched 19 Shahed-136/131 drones, as well as 12 Kalibr cruise missiles and two supersonic Onyx missiles over Odesa. The defenders of the sky shot down all Shaheds and 11 Calibers, and the rest of the targets led to landings, which, fortunately, were without casualties.
The sea station was damaged and a non-operating hotel located nearby, where a fire broke out, was damaged. “Onyx” missiles destroyed granaries.
Under the procedural leadership of the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation was started in criminal proceedings for violation of the laws and customs of war (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). Specialists recorded all the consequences of the attack by the Russian Federation, which damaged port infrastructure facilities, granaries, warehouses of a private enterprise and several private households in the suburbs of Odessa.
“The Odesa sea station and a hotel nearby suffered significant damage. Information about the victims is being clarified, the analysis of the debris is ongoing. A complete list of destruction and damage is being established. Prosecutors, investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine and police officers are working at the scene of the events,” the message says.
Since the damaged buildings in the historic center of Odessa are protected by UNESCO, all damage will be recorded, said the city’s chairman, Gennady Trukhanov.
On January 25, 2023, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee at an extraordinary session decided to add the cultural and historical monument “Historic Center of the Port City of Odessa” to the List of World Heritage in Danger.
At the beginning of May 2023, during a session of the Odesa City Council, the mayor of the city, Gennadiy Trukhanov, announced that the sea trade port was excluded from this list. At the same time, the head of the board of the Odesa regional organization of the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments Nataliya Motyryova said that there are many ancient objects in the Odesa port that have every reason to be included in the list. These are the Vorontsovsky Lighthouse, Red warehouses – warehouses built in the 19th century, etc.
The prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the night attack as a violation of the laws of war, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General. According to the investigation, the objects of the port infrastructure, warehouses of a private enterprise, several private sectors in the suburbs of Odesa, and a granary were damaged. The naval station itself and the nearby hotel were also severely damaged. Less, but it still got to the gas station. Because of this, about two thousand subscribers in the suburbs of Odesa were without gas and with interruptions in water supply.
