A Ukrainian journalist who was abducted by the Russians in Berdyansk last year disappeared in the temporarily occupied territory

Missing Ukrainian journalist Viktoriya Roschyna has not been contacted after reporting from the occupied territory. In March 2022, Roshchyna was detained for ten days by the FSB in the temporarily occupied Berdyansk. At the same time, z-channels began to distribute a video in which Victoria Roshchyna said that she had no complaints against the Russian special services, and the reason for her detention, according to her, was photos of military equipment of the Russian Armed Forces in her phone.

On October 4, it became known that Roschyna went missing in August 2023 from the Ukrainian territory temporarily occupied by Russia, from where she was reporting. This is reported by the International Women’s Media Fund. In order to get to the occupied territory, Roschyna left Ukraine for Poland on July 27. She planned to go through Russia to the occupied east of Ukraine in 3 days. She was last contacted on August 3. Then she said that she had passed several days of border checks, but did not say where she was.

On September 21, the journalist’s family registered an official case of disappearance with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Ministry of Reintegration, and the Ombudsman’s Office. As Victoria’s father stated, the SBU confirmed that she was captured by the Russians. According to him, the officials told the family that there are many “frozen” Ukrainian detainees in Russian prisons, among whom the missing journalist may be.
