Russia has already committed 2,500 environmental crimes in Ukraine

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has committed 2,500 environmental crimes in Ukraine.

This was stated by First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Economy Yulia Svyridenko and Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin during the United for Justice.United for Nature conference.

Svyridenko’s direct speech: “The war continues, and Russia continues to commit crimes, causing damage every day… 2,500 environmental crimes are documented.”

Svyridenko also emphasized that every day of the war is about 120 million euros in damages.

In turn, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Andriy Kostin, emphasized that Russia should pay for the damage it caused to the Ukrainian environment during the war: “We all agree that the Russian Federation as a state should pay for the damage and losses caused to the Ukrainian environment by this war.”

The Prosecutor General of Ukraine emphasized that without the confiscation of sovereign Russian assets, it will be very difficult for Ukraine to guarantee that these losses will be compensated.

He informed that the Ukrainian law enforcement officers establish the standards of investigation and prosecution of those guilty of crimes against the environment as war crimes and those guilty of the crime of ecocide.

“And we believe that this crime (ecocide) will be one of the recorded international crimes. We believe that it will be included in the Rome Statute. We know that it is important,” said the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
