A destroyed supermarket warehouse, broken windows and a frightened puppy under the rubble: the consequences of the Russian attack on Odessa

On the morning of June 24, the Russians attacked Odesa with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles. One was shot down, and the second hit the warehouse of the Tavria-V supermarket chain. This caused a fire in the warehouse, the blast wave blew out windows in residential buildings around.

Around 8:00 a.m. on June 24, Russians in Odesa attacked chips, bottles of water, other groceries, and windows of residential buildings, hitting the Tavria-V warehouse with an Iskander-M ballistic missile. The fire covered almost 3,000 square meters, and plumes of smoke from the burning thermal insulation rose high over the city.

In general, the destruction on an area of approximately five thousand square meters. The fire is very difficult, because the fire load is large precisely because of the area and because there is a lot of material inside that burns easily. And at the moment, when the fire was almost contained, there was an “air alarm” signal again, and the rescuers had to move to a safe distance, and the fire flared up again even more, – said the press secretary of the State Emergency Service Marina Averina.

Almost 100 rescuers and 19 units of emergency services took part in extinguishing the fire. Firefighters and rescuers of the State Emergency Service were assisted by volunteers, rescuers from the city authorities, the National Guard and the Red Cross. A Ukrzaliznytsia fire train was also involved, which provided uninterrupted water supply.

A repeated air alarm during the elimination of the consequences of a Russian missile hit stretched this process in time, and it was possible to completely eliminate the fire only until 13:00.

According to information provided by the rescuers, 4 men were injured and taken to the hospital. Another 46 people who were in the epicenter of the explosion were provided psychological assistance by specialists of the State Emergency Service and the National Police. A small dog was also found from under the rubble.

We work together with the State Emergency Service and are among the first to leave. We provide first aid if there are victims from under the rubble, and send an “ambulance”. A dog was taken out from under the rubble today. A small puppy. She was in a state of shock. She was given first aid. Now the vet will come and we will hand her over. Also, the Red Cross, together with the State Emergency Service, provided psychological assistance to people, Vyacheslav Vorobyov, deputy commander of the Red Cross rapid response unit, said.

Residential buildings around the epicenter of the explosion were also significantly damaged. A headquarters has been deployed at the site, which will work until 19:00.

I have two children who, fortunately, were not at home this morning… At the same time, there are no walls or windows. The balcony frame went inside. There are no words… A tent was set up near our Association of co-owners of an apartment building. I hope there will be some help, some tape or plywood to cover these windows for a while. I see that something is being done – people are walking, setting something up, – said Mykola, a resident of the affected apartment building.

Last year, the Russians already hit this same Tavria-V. During this time, it did not turn into a “NATO military base” and the Russians again destroyed food products. Fortunately, there were no deaths.

I cannot comment where there is no logic… Everyone is alive today. This factor is precisely the response to the air alarm. Today’s situation once again showed that the power of the rocket, which was used in relation to the civilian infrastructure, showed that it is the failure to ignore the air alarm that leaves people with the most precious and valuable – life. Well, look, if there were any shells or ammunition here, there would be a detonation, – said the head of the regional military administration Oleg Kiper.

He also once again urged the residents of Odesa not to ignore the “air alarm” signals.

According to official data, the Russians attacked Odesa with an Iskander-M ballistic missile. This is a fairly modern missile worth about 3 million dollars, which moves along a parabolic trajectory and hits the target almost perpendicular to the surface of the earth. Why the Russians spent this weapon on the destruction of the food warehouse is unknown.
