After the actions of the Russian Federation, Berdyansk is facing an ecological disaster, the district council said

Environmental problems are worsening in the occupied territories. Even after returning to the control of Ukraine, they will not be resolved immediately.

Viktor Dudukalov, the deputy head of the Berdyansk District Council, told what is happening in the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region. According to him, the main problem is water supply. The difficulties are related to the Kakhovskaya HPP, which was blown up by the Russians on June 6, 2023. As a result of this crime, the south of the Zaporizhzhia region was left without normal water. As of today and even after the deoccupation, it is not clear how to solve this problem. There are no other sources of fresh water within a radius of 200 kilometers or more. We only had the Kakhov reservoir, Dudukalov explained.

This is a major problem that affects both the agricultural sector and small businesses.

Contaminated soils

The territory in which active hostilities are taking place will be unsuitable for growing agricultural crops for a long time to come. In particular, due to dense mining, clearing of explosive objects can take years. What fed the Zaporizhzhia region at one time, today 70% is occupied, turned into a military facility. It is unclear when this land will feed us again, Dudukalov stated.
