Approximately 90 cases of war-related sexual violence, including as a means of torture, have been documented in Ukraine – UN Deputy Secretary General

Perpetrators involved in cases of sexual violence must be held accountable, DiCarlo said.

The UN continues to record serious violations of human rights during the war that Russia started against Ukraine.

UN Deputy Secretary General Rosemary Dicarlo announced this on January 13 at the UN Security Council meeting regarding Ukraine.

“Approximately 90 cases of war-related sexual violence have been documented. In particular, as a means of torture. There was also sexual violence that was carried out in the form of rape, including gang rape, in the territories controlled by Russia. Those responsible must be held accountable,” said DiCarlo.

Since the beginning of the full-scale military aggression of the Russian Federation, prosecutors have recorded 154 cases of sexual violence related to the conflict, the Office of the Prosecutor General reported in December 2022.

Russian commanders knew about the rape of Ukrainian women in the occupied territories by their soldiers and encouraged it, according to the material of The New York Times, which was published on January 5, 2023.

The Office of the President of Ukraine and the Office of the Ukrainian Ombudsman have repeatedly reported on the sexual crimes of the Russian army against the civilian population.

On March 22, 2022, the then Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venediktova reported on the first suspicion of the occupier in rape in Ukraine. On May 30, she said that the first wartime rape case had been brought to court.

British Ambassador to Kyiv Melinda Simmons believes that the Russian military is using rape as a weapon in the war against Ukraine.

Russia caused $127 billion in damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure

The damage to the civil and critical infrastructure of Ukraine exceeded $127 billion. The restoration of the country will become “one of the largest investment projects.”

This was stated by First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Emine Japarova at a meeting of the UN Security Council.

“Ukraine has become the largest construction site in Europe, which provides a wide range of opportunities for international partners to use the best practices in the field of engineering, construction and technology transfer,” Japarova said.

Despite the support of the state. Minagro estimated the damage to the agriculture of Ukraine from the war

The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, said that the damage that Russia has caused to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion exceeds 700 billion dollars.

On November 14, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on holding Russia accountable for its actions and forcing it to pay military reparations to Ukraine.

In September, Shmyhal said that the government wants to receive about 300-500 billion dollars of Russian assets frozen in various countries and use the funds to restore the country.

The UN recorded 745 attacks on medical facilities in Ukraine: this is the highest figure in the world

As of January 4, the UN recorded 745 attacks on health care facilities as a result of the full-scale Russian invasion. This is the highest rate among the ongoing military conflicts.

This is reported by the UN.

“According to reports, 15% of [healthcare] facilities are partially or completely not functioning, and up to 50% in Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv,” said UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary Dicarlo, speaking on 13 January at the meeting of the Security Council regarding the situation in Ukraine.

We will remind, according to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, 18,096 civilians have been affected: 6,952 died, and 11,144 were injured.

DiCarlo noted that “the actual numbers are probably much higher.” In Bakhmut alone, according to her, 22 civilians were killed and another 72 were injured since the intensification of hostilities in December.

In addition, the United Nations estimates that approximately 5.91 million people have been displaced as a result of the Russian invasion. 7.9 million were forced to leave for Europe.

The consequences are catastrophic: the Ministry of Natural Resources has calculated the damage to the Ukrainian environment from the war

The full-scale Russian invasion continues to damage the Ukrainian environment. Experts estimate the damage received at 46 billion dollars.

This was reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

How the effects of war on nature are evaluated

As the head of the department, Ruslan Strilets, noted, the largest share of damage is caused by air pollution — 27 billion dollars. These are greenhouse gas emissions due to forest fires and impacts on energy infrastructure.

According to the State Environmental Inspection, about 680,000 tons of oil and fuel were burned due to Russian shelling. The volume of emissions is equal to the annual work of the entire Bulgarian industry, the minister notes.

The damage caused to the soil is now estimated at 18 billion dollars. 23,300 hectares of forests burned.

In total, about 2,300 crimes against the environment have been documented since the beginning of the war. Ukraine will demand compensation from Russia for the entire amount, the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources added.

More about damages

We will remind you that earlier the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi signed a draft law on the nationalization of Russian assets.

The document also provides for the creation of the Fund for the Liquidation of the Consequences of Armed Aggression of the Russian Federation.

The government also said that they want to receive compensation from Russia for all the damage and destruction that the aggressor country caused to Ukraine. The amount of reparations is at least 300 billion dollars.

It is known in advance how many medical facilities were destroyed by the invaders during the war and which of them were repaired. It is noted that as a result of the actions of the occupiers, losses amount to more than 38 billion hryvnias.

In Sumy Oblast, losses from Russian aggression are being calculated for future reparations from the Russian Federation

Ecologists of the Sumy region are calculating the damage caused by the Russian military during the period of temporary occupation of the Sumy region in the form of damage to the environment.

In particular, only one episode, when during the escape of the occupiers from our land, they blew up the road bridge located between the villages of Chumakovo and Peresypky (in the Konotop region).

Then, 1,700 tons of construction structures were thrown directly into the water basin by explosion, which caused significant pollution of the ecosystem in the river.

In December 2022, specialists of the State Environmental Inspection carried out all the necessary calculations based on the materials of the criminal proceedings on this fact, which showed the damage to the environment caused by these actions of the rasches in the amount of more than 372 million hryvnias.

Undoubtedly, all these materials will become the basis of a future international lawsuit against the Russian Federation for full compensation for the damages.
