Ukraine’s energy system barely survived the last massive attack by the occupiers.
A massive missile attack on Ukraine seriously damaged the national energy system, as 9 thermal power plants were damaged as a result of the actions of the occupiers.
As Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ukrainian energy industry faced destructive consequences after the shelling.
According to the authorities, a total of 9 TPPs were damaged in the country: one in the East and another 8 in the West. The units of the thermal power plants failed after the Russian strike. In addition, an overhead line and three main substations need restoration.
This increased the capacity deficit, which led to the return of emergency shutdowns across Ukraine, the Prime Minister noted.
However, the power system survived, remained intact and manageable
Energy workers are repairing damaged objects of critical infrastructure around the clock. The head of the Cabinet stressed that the authorities are trying to ensure a greater flow of generators and transformers to eliminate damage.
We will remind you that Russia carried out the last massive missile attack on Ukraine using suicide drones.
Due to the Russian invasion, more than 59 thousand hectares of forests and other plantations were burned by rockets and shells, the State Environmental Inspection reports.
Some of these forests may recover within ten years at the most optimistic estimates, the rest are lost forever.
1.5 thousand tons of pollutants have already entered the water.
Also as a result of 10 months of war:
The State Inspectorate says that these changes “extremely negatively affect the natural environment not only of Ukraine, but also of Europe.”
Losses among civilians from February 24, 2022, when Russia started the war against Ukraine, to January 15, 2023 amounted to 18,358 civilians (a week earlier – 18,096), including 7,031 dead (6,952), the Supreme Human Rights Commission reported on the night of 16 January 2023.
“The cause of most of the recorded cases of death or injury of civilians was the use of explosive weapons with a large impact zone, in particular, heavy artillery and rocket salvo systems, as well as missile and airstrikes,” the document on UN data emphasizes.
This applies, for example, to such settlements as Mariupol (Donetsk region), Izyum (Kharkiv region), Lysychansk, Popasna and Severodonetsk (Luhansk region), where, according to reports, numerous cases of civilian deaths or injuries have been recorded.
According to confirmed UN data, 2,784 men, 1,875 women, 221 boys and 177 girls died, while the gender of 35 children and 1,939 adults has not yet been determined.
Among the 11,327 wounded, there are 325 boys and 240 girls, as well as 262 children whose gender has not yet been determined.
Compared to data on January 9, two children were killed and 17 children were injured.
If previously the report of the UN High Commission on Human Rights on the number of casualties was published daily, and then only on working days, since July it has become weekly. In this summary, as in the previous one, data are given by month.
According to them, the number of dead in December – 190 – exceeded the figure in November – 164, which was the lowest since the beginning of the war. March remains the deadliest month for civilians, according to the UN, with at least 3,366 deaths. In April, according to the publication of the administration of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights, the number of civilian deaths due to the war decreased to 710, in May – to 476, in June – to 376 and in July – to 360. In the first five days of the war, from 24 359 people died by February 28, 307 in August, 330 in September, and 287 in October.
The number of injured in December also exceeded November’s figure of 612 compared to 530. In October, the number of injured fell to 787 from 934 in September, when it was higher than August’s figure of 894 and slightly lower than the figures of the previous months: July – 1,100, June – May – 1021. In April and March, 1,257 and 2,416 people were wounded, respectively.
During the 15 days of the new year, the number of dead was 104, and the number of wounded was 284.
According to the summary, large-area explosive weapons killed 97 people and injured another 278 in January, while mines and explosive remnants of war killed 7 and injured 6 (3% of total casualties).
According to the UN, 90% of the victims in January were in government-controlled territories.
The summary traditionally states that the increase in indicators compared to the previous summary should not be attributed only to cases after January 9, since during this period the Office verified several cases from the previous days.
