Dniprorudny Chairman Yevgeny Matveyev, who actively opposed the Russians and refused to surrender the city, was captured on April 13, 2022.

According to Ivan Fedorov, the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, the Russians captured the mayor of Dniprorudny in February 2022, immediately after the occupation. He remained in the city to support the people and ensure the work of the community. Matveev was held captive for 2 years and 8 months. It is known that the Russians tortured him:

“Evgeny Sergeevich was a true patriot, not indifferent to the fate of his country and his community. He always worked with people and for the sake of people, listened to and helped everyone who needed it. He was strong-willed and principled. During the occupation, he did not leave either the city or the people, did everything to ensure the life of the community, constantly informed the population about the course of events and supported them,” Fedorov noted.
