Empty streets and gutted houses: how Russia is destroying a city in the Dnipropetrovsk region

The Russians continue to shell Nikopol.

The Russians are constantly shelling Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk region. Only in the last week, the Russians killed 2 people and wounded 8 more in the city.

One of the residents, Petro, says that his shop, where they used to sell household appliances, has already “flown in” twice in a year. Recently, the Russians launched a drone over the city, which killed a woman and injured 6 more people. Peter survived only because he was late for work.

Windows are broken in the house nearby. Another resident, Oleksiy, came to help the relatives of a friend who is currently fighting. He takes out the broken glass from the balcony, he will not install a new one yet.

Even during the day, the streets of Nikopol are half empty. Residents avoid open space – the alarm does not have time to sound when the shelling begins. A small bazaar is not the only island that is more or less crowded. Here, residents sell what they were able to grow in their own gardens despite the shelling. They also come here to find out the latest news.

During the fifteen months of shelling in Nikopol, nearly five thousand objects were destroyed or damaged. These are schools, hospitals, enterprises and hundreds of residential buildings.

“We don’t have a break between shelling, and at this time our main task is to eliminate the consequences of shelling. With the funds of the city budget, we are restoring damaged private houses and apartment buildings,” says the chairman of Nikopol, Oleksandr Sayuk.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Russians have killed 29 townspeople and wounded almost two hundred more. In the last week alone, eight people were injured and one person died in the city.
