Almost five dozen monuments were destroyed by rockets.
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the Russians have destroyed 46 monuments of cultural heritage in the Zaporizhzhia region. This was announced by the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, Ivan Fedorov.
On February 17, 2024, at night, a steam mill, which is a business card of the city, was destroyed by a Russian strike in Gulyaipolе. It is not the first time that he has come under Russian fire. This building in the center of the frontline city was already damaged by Russian military shelling in June 2022 and July 2023.
On October 6, 2022, building No. 151 on Soborny Avenue was damaged in Zaporizhzhia. It belongs to the historical area “Socialist Zaporizhzhia” and, together with other buildings, defines one of the main squares of Zaporizhzhia, which remains the center of cultural and public life – Mayakovsky Square.
And recently, the Russians defaced the monument to Nestor Makhno. It is not included in the list of monuments of cultural heritage, but since 2009 it has been an unofficial symbol of Gulyaipol. This monument is an important part of the historical heritage of the city, symbolizing the struggle of the Ukrainian people for freedom.
In Zaporizhzhia, the Dniproenergo Administration Building, built in 1930, wants to be given the status of a cultural monument of Ukraine and given appropriate protection. Local prosecutors appealed to the court with such a claim.
