How much environmental damage did the Russian Federation cause to Ukraine during the 500 days of the great war: staggering figures

During the 500 days of the full-scale war, Russia caused damage to the Ukrainian environment of about 51 billion euros or two trillion hryvnias. Every day, due to the war, nature suffers at least 102 million euros or four billion hryvnias in environmental damages. These sums do not take into account the damages caused by the ecocide committed by the occupiers at the Kakhovka hydroelectric station.

This was announced by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ruslan Strelets. According to him, every day the inspectors of the State Environmental Inspection of Ukraine record the destruction of the environment from hostilities.

“The numbers are terrifying. Today we already have about 51 billion euros or two trillion hryvnias of environmental damage. This means that every day of war costs at least 102 million euros or four billion hryvnias of environmental damage. Everything has its price,” Strelets emphasized.

At the same time, the minister added that the amount of damages did not include the ecocide committed by the Russians at the Kakhovskaya HPP.

“Calculations are ongoing. Russia will pay for every day of this war. For every burned tree. Every piece of Ukrainian land destroyed. To do this, we unite with the entire civilized world and work on the recognition of ecocide in international legislation,” he noted.
