
On the afternoon of March 24, an attack by strike drones damaged an architectural monument of national importance – the Bernardine Monastery ensemble. It is located in the center of Lviv, which is under enhanced protection by UNESCO.
This was reported by the head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, Maksym Kozytsky.
“The damage was caused to an architectural monument of national importance – the Bernardine Monastery ensemble. It is located in the historical area of Lviv, an object that is included in the International List of Cultural Properties under Enhanced Protection (UNESCO),” Maksym Kozytsky noted.
According to him, the fire engulfed the buildings adjacent to the complex. The extent of the damage will be determined by specialists.
UNESCO to inspect the site of the strike in Lviv
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga said that UNESCO experts will visit Lviv to record the destruction after the Russian strike on the cultural heritage site.
This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga. According to him, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already agreed with the organization’s specialists on a corresponding visit.
“Russia did not just strike buildings in the center of Lviv. This is a strike on UNESCO’s world heritage. A strike directly on UNESCO as an organization. A strike on everyone in the world who cares about cultural heritage. We demand strong reactions,” Sybiga emphasized.
The Foreign Minister also reported that Ukraine has appealed to UNESCO with a demand to initiate sanctions against Russia in the field of culture.
