In May, 11 people died in Sumy Region, and 32 more people were injured. This includes civilian residents. Vyacheslav Pechenenko, deputy head of the Sumy regional military administration, announced this during a briefing on May 26. According to him, after the death of Oblenergo employees while on duty, the military administration issued a new order.
Now, in the 5-kilometer border zone, all emergency and communal services can work only with the approval of the military command: “Heads of enterprises send these emergency teams only with personal protective equipment. These are helmets, bulletproof vests and individual first-aid kits. If the object, where the restoration work will be carried out, is close to the places of shelling, they must be accompanied by military units. In the event of an attack or some other actions, they must provide an opportunity for the emergency brigade to evacuate, so that they are not exposed to danger.” He also noted that in April-May 2023, shelling of Sumy Region doubled compared to previous months. This may mean that Russia is trying to hold part of the Ukrainian troops so that they do not strengthen the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces.
