In the center of Mariupol, temporarily captured by the Russian army, the Russians are dismantling the historic building of the Main Directorate of Internal Affairs.
This was reported by the city council of Ukrainian Mariupol: “The Russians are dismantling the historic building of the Main Directorate of Internal Affairs in the center of Mariupol… It was this building that the troops of the so-called “DPR” tried to capture in 2014. Then the policemen died who were faithful to their oath to the last… Here every year flowers were placed at the memorial board in memory of them,” the report says.
Before the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, this building was planned to be fully restored and given a new life.
“But the Russians decided otherwise. Now all this is being demolished,” the city council stated.
As reported, Russia’s aggression caused one of the biggest humanitarian disasters in Mariupol. The city is almost 90% destroyed as a result of Russian shelling. Damaged and destroyed residential buildings, hospitals, schools, kindergartens, etc.
The Russians destroy the houses they damaged in the city in order to hide the traces of their crimes.
It is known that three thousand houses were destroyed in Mariupol in the private sector alone. Many migrants from Russia came to the seaside town, supposedly for its “reconstruction”.
In 2014, the city of Mariupol was under the control of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” for a month. In May of that year, the building of the Department of Internal Affairs was captured. On May 9, there were clashes there, during which law enforcement officers and local residents were killed and wounded. Mariupol was liberated on June 13, 2014.
