People live in basements and shelters to the sound of constant explosions: report from Bakhmut

About 6,000 civilians still remain in frontline Bakhmut. People live in basements and shelters to the sound of constant explosions, needing food, water and firewood. The armed forces are not going to hand over the city to the Russian invaders.

For civilians, constant explosions have long become everyday. Every day, people try to survive under shelling, not wanting to leave their hometown. They try not to leave their shelters unnecessarily.

Over the past week, shelling of residential buildings has significantly increased, local residents say. In many places, the infrastructure of the city is completely broken.

Several points of invincibility continue to work in the city. But closer to the evening, people go home.

“We started closing an hour earlier now, because the curfew in Bakhmut is from four. We used to work until four, now until three. People leave a little earlier so that we can clean up, and people can get home, and we can get home,” says volunteer Iryna Markova.

In the invincibility point, you can get food, medicine, and you can also be fed with hot food and drink tea there. Ukrainian news is shown through the projector, and there is also access to the Internet.

“There are 200-300 people. About a hundred people a day come to us for medicines alone. There are fewer, but about a hundred people a day. And we are also doing evacuation from here,” says the volunteer.

Civilians die almost every day in Bakhmut from hostilities. The Ukrainian authorities are asking the remaining people to evacuate, because from February 13 entry into the city is only possible with special passes. This has reduced the amount of humanitarian aid brought in. This decision was made after repeated shelling and deaths of volunteers there.
