Residents of front-line Kherson, which suffers daily from Russian shelling, are skeptical of peace talks. The occupation, shelling, and constant drone attacks make people doubt the reality of the ceasefire.
“There will be no peace as long as they remain on the other side of the river. There will be constant terror, continuous shelling,” says 64-year-old Serhiy, who was injured by a grenade dropped from a drone.
Another victim is in the hospital, 30-year-old Igor, who was seriously injured while searching for a mobile phone.
“I don’t want other people to end up in the hospital like I did,” he said.
According to the head of the Kherson regional military administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, the city is subjected to up to 700 drone attacks every week. Because of this, even bus drivers are forced to work in bulletproof vests and helmets.
“It’s very scary, especially when there are small children on the bus,” says 38-year-old driver Maksym, whose vehicle has been attacked ten times.
Despite the threat, Kherson residents are staying in the city.
