As of December 2024, 301 Ukrainian civilian women remain in Russian captivity. At least 25 of them have been held since before the start of the full-scale invasion, and 276 were deprived of their liberty after February 2022.
This was reported by the head of the board of the Crimean Human Rights Group Olga Skrypnyk during a meeting of the Council on Human Rights, Gender Equality and Diversity under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
She emphasizes that the real figures may be much higher, since Russia does not provide information about civilians. However, it is already clear that the number of female prisoners has increased 11 times since February 24, 2022.
According to her, the government’s priority remains the return of all prisoners of war and civilians home. At the same time, those released will need systematic support, including financial and psychological.
“It is very important to clearly determine which government structure will be responsible for assisting this category of victims and their families. It is necessary to continue the work of the Commission to establish the facts of deprivation of liberty so that families can receive at least minimal assistance,” Skrypnyk noted.
