More than 100 Ukrainian and foreign journalists accredited in Ukraine were affected by the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, according to the international human rights organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
According to the organization, 11 journalists have died in the line of duty since February 24, 2022. At least 35 journalists were injured while covering the situation at the front, attacks on TV towers, media offices and hotels.
Also, two Ukrainian journalists, Viktoria Roshchyna and Dmytro Khilyuk, are considered missing in Russia.
At least 12 journalists were detained in the territories of Ukraine occupied by Russian troops.
“In the occupied Ukrainian territories, Russia tracks journalists who refuse to cooperate.”Over the past two years, at least 12 local journalists have been detained by the Russian occupation forces, some of whom have been sentenced,” the report says.
233 Ukrainian media were forced to stop their activities due to reasons related to the invasion of Russia, human rights activists noted.
According to the Institute of Mass Information, as of the beginning of November 2023, since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has killed 68 journalists. 10 of them died while performing professional duties, 58 as participants in hostilities or as a result of Russian shelling or torture (45 of them died as participants in hostilities, 13 as a result of Russian shelling or torture).
