Over a thousand attacks in two years. The Ministry of Energy spoke about the real losses of the energy system of Ukraine

From October 2022 to September 2024, Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities were subjected to 1,024 Russian attacks.

This was said by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko during the international high-level conference “United for Justice”.

“There is no place, no region, no type of energy infrastructure that will not be hit during these attacks. The total loss of our capacity as a result of this year’s attacks, which began on March 22, exceeds 9 GW. 18 GW of generation is occupied, including HPP, TPP and the largest nuclear power plant in Europe — Zaporizhzhіa NPP,” the minister emphasized.

Galushchenko noted that the most massive enemy attack was on August 26, 2024, when the enemy used a total of 236 drones and missiles of various types.

“That was the first time ballistic missiles were used to attack our substations. The immediate result of this attack was that approximately 4 million Ukrainians were immediately disconnected from the electricity supply. This directly affected 12 regions of Ukraine, and it took us approximately 13 days to fully restore electricity supply,” the minister said.

Galushchenko emphasized that with such attacks, Russia wants to cause direct harm to the civilian population of Ukraine, which is a violation of the key principles of international law and the UN Charter. In addition, by attacking substations that are key to the operation of nuclear power plants, Russia is undermining the basic principles of nuclear safety.

It was previously reported that on March 22, 2024, massive Russian attacks on energy infrastructure resumed. Since May, restrictions on electricity consumption have been applied in Ukraine.

On April 11, 2024, as a result of a missile attack by Russia, the Trypil TPP in the Kyiv region was completely destroyed.

Centerenergo lost 100% of generation after the destruction of the Trypil TPP. In March 2024, DniproHES lost both power plants. The dam survived, but the equipment was destroyed, the restoration of the Dnipro HPP may take years.

In Kharkiv, CHP-5 was destroyed, restoring it is the same as building a new one, which is also a task for several years.

The Zmiyiv TPP (part of Centerenergo) was destroyed, it is also located in the Kharkiv region.

DTEK Group (beneficiary — Rinat Akhmetov) announced that it had lost 80% of its generation.

All power units of the Burshtynska and Ladyzhynska TPPs were damaged.

Gas storage facilities in western Ukraine were damaged.

As of May 9, 2024, two HPPs were decommissioned.

On May 20, Ukrenergo announced that all large thermal and hydroelectric power plants in Ukraine were damaged due to Russian shelling.

On June 1, the Russian Federation attacked Ukraine’s power system in five regions. DTEK reported serious damage to two of its TPPs. This was the sixth attack on Ukraine’s power system since March 2024.

On June 20, Russia struck new blows at Ukraine’s energy sector, damaging energy facilities in four regions. A critical infrastructure object was hit in the Vinnytsia region. In addition, Russia attacked the DTEK thermal power plant. The equipment is seriously damaged.

On July 8, 2024, due to the Russian attack, Kyiv was immediately left without three DTEK substations.
