So far, more than 110,000 violations of the laws and customs of war by the Russian invaders on the territory of Ukraine have already been documented.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi emphasized the importance of recording the war crimes of the occupiers for further prosecution and punishment.
“Collecting the proper evidence base of all the atrocities committed by the Russians on our land is a very responsible and historically weighty job. I thank everyone who carries it out,” he said.
Zelenskyі also noted that very important results were achieved in cooperation between the prosecutor’s office of Ukraine and the International Criminal Court. In particular, after the opening of the ISS Office in Kyiv, Ukrainian specialists “can work together with international experts on a daily basis.”
“I will also note the opening in the Netherlands – in The Hague – of the International Center for Prosecution for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine,” the head of state said.
Zelenskyi added that this is a joint and painstaking effort to coordinate and preserve evidence against Russian criminals for the trials that will inevitably take place.
“It is very important that the prosecutor’s office of Ukraine works promptly with regard to all acts of terror, shelling and bullying that Russia has carried out and continues to carry out in various Ukrainian regions,” the president emphasizes.
According to Zelenskyi, persons responsible for criminal orders are being quickly identified both in the Rosarmy and in the political environment. Cases of abduction and illegal deportation of Ukrainian children by the occupiers are also being investigated.
“There are already warrants for the arrest of Putin (Russian dictator Vladimir Putin – ed.) and others who are responsible for this whole full-scale criminal operation,” he reminded.
War crimes of the Russian Federation in Ukraine
During the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army regularly commits war crimes. A number of Western countries condemned the Kremlin for this and promised to punish all those involved in the crimes.
Recently, a United Nations commission of inquiry announced that it had found additional evidence of Russian military aggression and war crimes in Ukraine, including the rape and deportation of children to the Russian Federation.
It was also reported that the United States of America will provide $1 million to the International Center for the Investigation of Crimes of Aggression against Ukraine, established in The Hague.
Europol recently created a new task force (OTF) to assist in the investigation of war crimes in Ukraine.
