Russia is expanding its attack drone launch sites near the borders with Belarus and Ukraine

Russia has built at least 10 launch sites for long-range attack drones along the borders with Ukraine and Belarus. They house at least 59 mechanical platforms, each capable of carrying up to 1,000 drones, according to Radio Svaboda, citing an assessment by the US-based Institute for the Study of War.

According to experts at the Institute for the Study of War, the goal is to intensify strikes on western Ukraine and increase the volume of salvoes fired across the country. Russia, as noted in the report, also seeks to use Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet-powered drones to penetrate Ukrainian air defenses thanks to their greater speed and stability.

Analysts believe that relocating the launch sites allows for better protection of the drone infrastructure. Furthermore, Russia is preparing to deploy its own Starlink-like system, the Rassvet system. The Institute for the Study of War warns that the new bases could also be used for strikes against NATO countries if the Kremlin so decides: they increase the volume of salvos and ensure the drones’ reach within the alliance’s territory.

Earlier in June, Radio Svaboda identified a network of Russian airfields and launch sites near the Belarusian border that could be used to launch hundreds of attack drones.
