Ukrainian railways are constantly under fire from Russia. Locomotives and drivers are coming under fire. This information was released by Oleksiy Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for Infrastructure.
According to Kuleba, the Russians have changed tactics and are now attacking trains and their crews. The number of attacks has doubled since July, indicating an aggravation of the situation.
It is estimated that since the beginning of 2025, Russia has already carried out more than 800 strikes on Ukrzaliznytsia facilities, damaging more than 3,000 transport nodes and causing losses of more than $1 billion.
Separately, Kuleba says that Russian drones are actively attacking locomotives, directing fire at drivers in order to complicate train movement.
The Deputy Prime Minister explained what strategic goals Russia pursues by attacking Ukraine’s railway infrastructure:
In the South – blocking the routes for transporting goods to the ports.
On the border – destroying communications in the Chernihiv and Sumy regions.
In the East – destroying industry in Donbas, which depends on rail transport.
The militants’ new tactics are visible in the example of the attack on the railway station in Lozova in the Kharkiv region. A witness says that she woke up from an explosion in the middle of the night and saw trains being shelled at the station.
After the attack on the Lozova station, the tracks are quickly restored, but the losses on the locomotives are irreversible. Russia’s goal is to fulfill the tasks set to weaken Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Currently, Russian attacks on Ukrzaliznytsia are becoming increasingly acute, threatening not only the infrastructure, but also ordinary workers and passengers. Russia is conducting targeted attacks on trains and stations, trying to inflict as much damage as possible on Ukrainian railways in order to undermine Ukraine’s economy and defense capabilities.
