Russian troops have intensified strikes on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, focusing fire on locomotives and repair bases. Over the past three months, the country has lost over 10–12% of its traction fleet — both electric and diesel locomotives. These losses have already significantly affected the ability to ensure stable freight transportation, in particular for the needs of the army and the energy sector.
According to Oleksandr Pertsovsky, Chairman of the Board of Ukrzaliznytsia, the Russians are deliberately choosing civilian trains — especially those carrying coal — as targets for strikes. This tactic has a double effect: destroying critical infrastructure and creating logistical chaos, which complicates the supply of resources to the front and rear.
A separate threat is posed by attacks on depots and repair bases, which not only service locomotives, but are also used to modernize military equipment. The destruction of these facilities paralyzes the prompt restoration of damaged equipment and jeopardizes the mobility of the defense forces.
Despite the losses, Ukrainian railway workers continue to work on restoring equipment and infrastructure. However, according to experts, to compensate for the losses, it is necessary to urgently replenish the locomotive fleet, modernize repair facilities, and strengthen the protection of key facilities.
An attack on the railway is not just an attack on transport, but a strategic attempt to undermine the economic stability of Ukraine. In wartime, the railway system remains critically important for the functioning of the state, and its protection is a matter of national security.
