Russia threatened Slovakia over compensation for Ukraine
Russia could have put pressure on the government of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to prevent the country from joining the Convention on the Establishment of an International Compensation Commission for Ukraine.
This was stated by Ivan Novotny, a deputy of the Slovak opposition party “Freedom and Solidarity”, in an interview with Aktuality.sk.
According to Ivan Novotny, Slovakia planned to sign the convention in July, but Fico eventually withdrew his signature. Novotny claims that threats from Russia could have been the reason.
The politician said that on July 10, a warning was allegedly issued at the Slovak embassy in Moscow: if the agreement is signed, Russia will regard it as a “hostile step.”
Novotny said that he received information about the pressure from a source in the Slovak Foreign Ministry, and later confirmed it through a representative of diplomatic circles.
The issue of Slovakia’s participation in the convention was also to be considered by the government on August 26. According to the oppositionist, during the meeting, Fico announced without discussion that he would move on to the next issue.
At the same time, Novotny does not currently plan to file a legal complaint due to possible Russian interference. He said that the opposition will monitor the situation and, if concrete evidence of possible cooperation with a foreign state appears, will consider an appeal for high treason.
